WALK WORTHY OF YOUR CALLING
1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (WEB)
What does it mean to walk worthy of your calling? Does it mean that we have to try harder to live a Christian life? Do we have to be more disciplined or more focused? Does it mean giving more, praying more, working more? In many Christian circles, the answer would be a resounding... YES!
While I don't think that any of these things are necessarily bad, I do think that to walk worthy of our calling has nothing to do with self-effort. It has everything to do with knowing who we really are and living our lives in that reality.
The Apostle Paul encourages us to fix our eyes on the eternal and not the temporal. To be aware of the unseen things and not the things that are seen (2 Corinthians 4:18). I truly believe that the more we can live our lives through the eyes of faith and not by the dictates of the fallen world, the more we will walk in a way that is worthy of our calling.
The truth is that we are sons and daughters to the Most High God (1 John 3:1). The truth is that we are joint-heirs with Jesus Christ (Romans 8:16-17). The truth is that we are seated in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6) and are blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). When we come to terms with who we really are, we will live as if that is our present reality.
My prayer today is that we would all know how much we are loved by God and the knowledge of His love would cause us to live a life worthy of how He has called us to live. Not through striving but through patient humility. Not through religious activity, but through genuine love for each other.
A prince or a princess who acts like a pauper does not bring any honor to their father who happens to be the king. If they act as if they are needy, if they behave as if they are without authority, they are not expressing the truth of who they truly are. Neither should it be with us. The way that we can glorify our God and Father is to simply live out our lives as a royal priesthood and children of the King.
