MINISTERING SERVANTS TO THE HEIRS
Hebrews 1:13-14
13 But which of the angels has he told at any time, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet?” 14 Aren’t they all serving spirits, sent out to do service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation? (WEB)
When Jesus met his future disciple Nathaniel, He told him that he would see angels ascending and descending upon Jesus throughout His ministry. We know that angels ministered to Jesus after He had fasted 40 days (Matthew 4:11), and Jesus told His disciples that His Father would send 12 legions of angels to rescue Him in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:53) if Jesus so desired. Psalm 34:7 also tells us... The angel of Yahweh encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. (WEB)
Although we don't see them with our physical eyes, angels play a vital role in the lives of every believer. In today's Bible passage, we learn that they are serving spirits for those who will inherit salvation. The Amplified Bible translates Hebrews 1:14 this way... Are not the angels all ministering spirits (servants) sent out in the service [of God for the assistance] of those who are to inherit salvation? (AMP) Who are the heirs of salvation? ...YOU and ME!
My prayer today is that we all find encouragement in the thought that our Heavenly Father has sent His angels to watch over us because we are His heirs! While we should keep focusing on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2) and not get distracted by the work angels do, they surround us wherever we go! May the Holy Spirit open our eyes to this truth, just as He did for Elisha's servant in the story below...
2 Kings 6:14-18
14 Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night, and surrounded the city. 15 When the servant of the man of God had risen early, and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16 He answered, “Don’t be afraid; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Elisha prayed, and said, “Yahweh, please open his eyes, that he may see.” Yahweh opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha. 18 When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.” He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
