LOVE DEFINED
1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. (WEB)
How do you define the word 'love'? For most of us, the only way that we can understand the concept of 'love' is to relate to it by how we have received and given love personally. When I speak about the love of God to others, I often feel frustrated because I am limited to using just words to describe what is indescribable.
In Jeremiah 31:3, we read how God says... "I have loved you with an everlasting love." How can we possibly comprehend this kind of love with our human understanding? It is a love that has always been and a love that will always be. In Psalm 103, King David writes that the love of God is as high as the heavens are above the earth. Again, how can we measure such a great love?
The simple answer to these questions can be found in today's Bible reading. This is love... Not that we loved God, but God loved us! And the proof of His love is the once and for all sacrifice of His Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
I truly believe that the only way any of us can even comprehend the eternal love that our Father has for us is by looking at the cross. When Jesus took upon Himself all of our sin and all of our diseases, He demonstrated the ultimate sacrifice. This IS love! God dying for us is the very expression of love itself.
My prayer today is that we would all receive a fresh revelation of the love that God has for us. He proved His love for us once and for all two thousand years ago. May we never, ever, doubt His love simply because we don't feel His love.
All we have to do is look to the cross for a fresh reminder of our eternal, unending value to God. May we all be rooted and grounded in this love today and may the Spirit of God give us power to grasp the vastness of His immeasurable love more and more in increasing measure.
Ephesians 3:16-21
16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.20 Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. (WEB)
