MARCH 29
THE ABBA CRY
Mark 14:35-36
35 He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him. 36 He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire.” (WEB)
At the most difficult time in Jesus' life on earth, He cried out to His Father calling Him 'Abba'. The word 'Abba' is an Aramaic word that is the most simplest way for little children to call out to their father. In English, it would be like us calling out 'Papa' or 'Daddy'.
I find it interesting that at the most mature moment in the Son's life on earth, when He had to say yes to His Father's cup and take upon Himself the weight of the world, He cried out 'Papa!' I believe His childlike cry to His Father for help shows how clearly dependent He was on His Father in every way.
Can you imagine how this desperate cry from a broken son, who was sweating great drops of blood as a result of the immense stress He was suffering, would have touched His Father's heart? For those of us who have children ourselves... How would you feel if you saw one of your own children in such anguish?
There is no way we can fathom the pain and suffering that our Lord and Savior endured on our behalf. May the reality of His cry out to His Abba in this time of despair be a small reminder of the incomprehensible price that He paid for our redemption.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (WEB)
