A GREAT EXAMPLE OF FAITH
Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform. Therefore it also was “reckoned to him for righteousness.” (WEB)
Every believer is linked to Abraham and the amazing example of faith he showed throughout his life. In Galatians 3:13-14, we read how Jesus' death on the cross opened up the door for the blessing of Abraham to be lavished on the Gentiles.
My hope is that today's Scripture passage would encourage you in your own journey of faith. In it, the Apostle Paul tells of Abraham's unwavering faith in the promise of God to give him and his wife a child even though he was one hundred years old. Even though his body might have been weak, his faith was as strong as ever. I love how Paul says that Abraham didn't waver through unbelief, but grew strong in his faith...
So what was the secret of Abraham's faith? Was he trusting in his own faith or was he trusting in the faithfulness of his God? Of course we know the answer. He was fully persuaded that his God was the ultimate promise keeper and that He was able to do whatever He had promised. It was this confidence that caused Abraham to be steadfast and continue to stand and expect God to fulfill His promise.
My prayer is that each one of us would know that our faith is not rooted in our own ability to be faithful, but in the eternal faithfulness of our God and Father. He loves us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) and He does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17).
What He has promised, He will do. Because of the faith of this old man thousands of years ago, we are now partakers of all the blessings that were bestowed on this hero of the faith. May we all be encouraged to continue in our own journey of faith today too.
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. (WEB)
