Psalm 37:7
Rest in Yahweh, and wait patiently for him. Don’t fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who makes wicked plots happen. (WEB) The first line in today's Bible reading is profound and one of the hardest things for most of us to do: Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Rest and waiting are not always easy in a world system that celebrates our independence and initiative. David goes on in this psalm to tell us not to worry about those who seem to prosper around us, even though they aren't the most honest people. Learning to rest is not about becoming lazy or inactive. It is about developing a heart posture completely dependent on God's work through us. Though Jesus faced many demands during His three years of ministry on earth, He always moved from a place of rest, waiting on His Father to guide Him. The gospels often describe Jesus' complete dependence on His Father. He only did what He saw His Father doing and spoke the words He heard His Father speaking. His heart was always at rest while He waited. My prayer today is that our God and Father would give us the wisdom to know how to enter a deeper place of rest within our souls than we have ever known. Hebrews 4 tells us that sometimes we have to work to enter into the rest that God desires for us, as this is not native to our upbringing. May God give us the grace today to enter into His rest and cease from our own works so that we can truly wait upon Him and so that He can renew our strength. Hebrews 4:9-11 9 There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered into his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.
